Skin Deep; Have You Read the Ingredients?
Beauty is only skin deep, right? Maybe this statement isn’t so true. Our skin is bombarded with about 10 different products every day by the average person, from shampoos, soaps, make-up, deodorant, and nail polish. That’s crazy! We absorb almost 130 chemicals that we expose ourselves to, leaving our skin acting like a sponge instead of a barrier!
We’ve learned to eliminate processed foods and do away with the amount of chemicals we’re ingesting. Interestingly enough though, despite the trend to eat and consume more natural and organic foods, we as consumers are still overlooking the skin and body care products we use. The fact is what we put onto our bodies, we’re putting into our bodies.
Did you know that our skin is our body’s largest organ? It is also our protective barrier against harmful substances, but that doesn’t mean it’s impervious to everything. Part of the problem with standard skin care products is that they contain endocrine-disrupting phthalates, such as parabens and BPA. These endocrine disruptors wreak havoc in and on our bodies. They’re known to harm reproductive health, affect thyroid function, cause hormonal imbalances, as well as cause cancer. Some of the adverse effects are seen right away like allergies, fatigue and chronic illnesses. The very least, these chemicals cause a deterioration of our skin, causing premature aging.
We don’t want that, right? The truth is, with so many chemicals on the market, and new ones being developed every day, we just don’t know the long-term effects on our bodies.
This is, in part, why we created the Honey Hill Naturals line, and continue to develop it. Our daughter Tara, developed cancer when she was 18 years old. She was always a natural type of girl, however, the products she did use were extremely toxic. During her natural journey, we simplified as much as we could. During Tara's radiation treatments, Tara couldn't use the mainstream soaps and products because it would react negatively with the therapy, however, our natural soaps, sprays and oils were approved by her doctor. We use only natural and organic products that do not contain any of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Going natural is not only good for you, it’s also good for the planet!
