Magnificent Magnesium

Magnesium

Let’s talk about Magnesium. I have been doing lots of research lately on natural therapies, supplements, and overall health and I keep seeing magnesium quite a bit. I thought I should write about this one. There is so much information out there about this mineral, that I think it may be confusing as to which kind you need or may want to take. I found this great online article written by Amy Neuzil, ND, titled “Ask the ND: The Best Kind of Magnesium For You” that goes into great detail about this wonderful mineral. So, let’s get right into it.

Magnesium is a water-soluble mineral that is needed in just about every single body process. It helps us to relax, improves our mood, prevents muscle cramps, prevents headaches, helps treat muscle movements like in restless leg syndrome, high blood pressure, and even helps with proper hormone functioning. It is needed for all the electrical energy reactions in every cell of our body! That’s pretty amazing for such a small guy!

As with any nutrient, we’re always concerned with absorption. If we aren’t absorbing the nutrients, they’re doing us no good. Dr. Neuzil states that magnesium isn’t generally absorbed well. If we are already magnesium deficient, which most of us are caused by stress, eating poorly, and too many medicines that deplete our stores, then our bodies will likely absorb a magnesium supplement fairly easily. She says,

“Generally, if you’re taking a magnesium supplement its best on an empty stomach. Magnesium also absorbs well through the skin (potentially far better than through the digestive tract), so Epsom salt baths (magnesium sulphate) and magnesium lotions, gels or oils (usually magnesium chloride) can be a great way to increase your body stores. Topical forms can be best if you’re using magnesium for its muscle relaxation and calming properties.”

I have used a topical Magnesium Oil Spray that I make myself for about two years now and I really love it!

The Different Types of Magnesium Supplements

·         Magnesium Chelate – This is the kind that’s found in foods naturally. It is said that this is more highly absorbable by the body. Chelate is bound to proteins called amino acids.

·         Magnesium Citrate – If you’re having stomach issues, this one’s for you. Citrate is combined with citric acid. This one may cause a natural laxative effect when taken in higher doses, but it is considered safe for preventing constipation or improving digestion.

·         Magnesium Sulphate/Chloride – If you’re needing muscle pain relief, increase your energy, or need better absorption, this one’s for you. This form can be made into an oil and applied topically to the skin. When applied topically, no digestion is involved, and our bodies readily absorb more of the magnesium.

·         Magnesium Glycinate/Bisglycinate – if you’re needing mental calmness and relaxation, this one’s for you. Glycinate is highly absorbable especially if you’re also needing amino acids. This form binds to proteins.

·         Magnesium L-threonate – If you’re needing cognitive support for brain function, brain injuries, epilepsy, or Alzheimer’s for example, this one’s for you. This form is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and studies show this form will improve memory and learning disabilities. Since other magnesium supplement types do not cross the blood-brain barrier, this is vitally important when it comes to EMF-sensitive people. This is because of the flooding effects from calcium-channel blockers caused by EMFs. Magnesium is a natural calcium-channel blocker. *

·         Magnesium Taurate – If you’re having heart conditions or declined cardiac function, this one’s for you. This form is less common than the others, but usually you can find it online. This form helps to relax the heart muscles and helps to deliver more blood to that area.

Transdermal Magnesium Oil Spray - Here at Honey Hill Natural, we created an easy spray designed to give you fast acting relief. This transdermal therapy has given me relief from ailments like headaches and migraines, insomnia, depression, anxiety, pain and also muscle cramps. It is truly amazing for the whole body! Our magnesium flakes come from the salt beds of the Zechstein Sea, and a touch of Lavender 100% essential oil. Our transdermal spray is quickly absorbed through our skin and into our bloodstream, allowing for complete tissue saturation.

I discovered the importance of mg about 8 years ago now, when my daughter was diagnosed with her cancer. She was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma of the chest wall. As you can imagine, I wasn’t getting much sleep during this journey. I was introduced to magnesium oil spray so that I could get some sleep. When I first made it, I didn’t know what to expect. I already ate very well. My daughter was extremely disciplined so that made me very disciplined because I wasn’t going to bring in any sort of temptation to deter her in any way. I believe in supplements and what they can do to help enrich the blood and the body, but I really didn’t expect to feel what I felt that first time. This is when I understood just how stress depletes mg in our bodies.

I was typically getting only about 2 hours of sleep at night. I remember getting four hours of sleep that first time I used my Magnesium Oil Spray. I thought okay, that literally doubled my sleep time. But the most impactful thing about it was that the quality of sleep was incredible! It was such a deep, restful sleep that I felt like I slept an entire 8 hours! I was so energized and felt so good! As I continued to use it, I began to get six hours of sleep until I was sleeping the full 8 hours.

With that, I use our Magnesium Oil Spray as a supplement every day in the morning (I spray it on my legs after my shower), and as a sleep aide at night at bedtime. (I spray it on the bottoms of my feet. Since the pores on the bottoms of our feet are larger, they allow for better absorption.) I also use this in combination with our Lavender Fine Mist Spray, which I call the Better Sleep Bundle. It's amazing! If interested in trying it, check it out here!

As with taking any supplement, balance is key. Magnesium typically has very few side effects or risks, however, magnesium does combine, or attach itself, to other nutrients. Taking the recommended dosage given on the bottles is best, unless instructed by your doctor otherwise. When taking the transdermal method of magnesium, there’s no need to worry about overdosing, since our bodies only take in what is needed. Unlike when we take supplements orally, our bodies then need to digest all of it and filter out the waste.

I hope this helps you in figuring out which magnesium supplement is right for you.
